First of all, thank you to everyone who took the time to vote and voice your opinion on how we should proceed with our minor league draft. Unfortunately, we were tied 4-4, so I have come up with a compromise that should allow both sides to feel satisfied with our draft system. I have spent a lot of time thinking over the process, and the results are a combination of your opinions and my personal experiences in other leagues.
The draft will be as follows:
Our draft will take place one week after the end of the MLB draft, this year that date is June 14th (Saturday). Owners will be allowed to select any player who was taken in the 2014 MLB draft as well as any minor league players who are not currently on rosters (remember, we had two minor league systems not drafted when the league started). In future years, draft order will be determined by the final regular season standings (playoffs will not factor into draft spot). The team with the worst record will pick first, and the best record will pick last. This year, since we have not completed a full season, we will reverse the first round draft order from our initial draft, the order will be posted below.
Drafting one week after the MLB draft will do several things for our league. First, it will remove the ability to watch a prospect get signed and play during their first year. Not having that information will increase the risk and need to research players ourselves. If a player decides to decline a contract and head to college, they are still on your team, you might just have to wait a few years before they start their professional career. Second, doing it in June instead of during the winter months will provide owners with a break from fantasy baseball. I have found that year round leagues tend to burn people out, by having it during the season, it will give us several months to focus on other things (especially important if you play other fantasy sports).
The draft clock will start at 10 a.m. central standard time on Saturday June 14th. Each owner will have 24 hours to make their pick. Once an owner makes his pick, the clock starts for the next owner. If anyone misses one pick, a make up pick can be made at the END of the draft. This will be a 5 round draft. The 6th round will be for missed picks, posted in the order that they were missed. If an owner misses multiple picks, he will only be able to make up the first pick he missed. Additional missed picks will be forfeited. I understand that we get busy, so if you aren't sure if you will be available to make your pick, feel free to email me with a short list of guys you want (in order of preference). I will be more than happy to post the pick for any of you. (jimjones9989@yahoo.com)
